THE KING IN FRANCE.
FAYS VISIT TO THE PROMT. GREAT DEMONSTRATIONS OF LOYALTY. London, Aug. 15. Mr Philip Gibbs says: The King visited all parts of fcbe Front. All the traffic and turmoil of the war surged about him. An endless procession of the Empire’s manhood passed him on the roads, not in review order, but men going to do the work of the war. The King took certain risks. He went well within the range of the enemy’s guns and stood among the wreckage and ruins of war, where the ground was a graveyard for gallent men. The King’s presence in the danger zone stirred the troops greatly. The King and Sir Douglas Haig met President Poincaire and Generals Joft're and Foch on Saturday and attended services among the troops on Sunday. They visited the King and Queen of Belgium on Monday. The essential character of the visit was its informalily and absence of ceremony. The party inspected the men’s billets without escort. The King passed a thousand Australians assembled round their own headquarters. They made a great demonstration of loyalty. The King, addressing General '"Birdwood, expressed his high appreciation of their magnificent work. A little later, quite unexpectedly, there came down the road a large body of Anzacs from Pozieres in full kit, with all the dirt and dust of tbe battle upon them, whistling and singing. “Hullo, boys,” shouted an officer, ‘ ‘here’s the King. ” They halted, flung off their hats and cheered. tremendously. It was a fine, stirring scene, tbe better for its unjxpecteduess.
London, A a?;. 16. The King returned to London yesterday in excellent health.
