MANUFACTURE OF MUNITIONS.
A REMARKABLE INCREASE. Reuter. Received August 16, 1 p.m. London, August 15. In the House of Commons, Mr Montague stated that the output of shells had increased so much’tbat a comparison with 1914 was useless, Besides a large amount of munitions and guns we are supplying the Allies with metals for munitions of the value of six million monthly. We are sending to France one-tbird of our production of steel for shells. He urged the importance of a further dilution of labour. 5,000 soldiers had been released for munition work. 095,000 persons were employed in making munitions a year ago, and now there were 2 1 4 millions, whereof 400,000 were women. Reuter. London, Aug. 15. In the House of Commons Mr E. Montague stated that Britain.was manufacturing monthly twice as many heavy guns as she possessed at the outbreak of the war; the output of machine guns had increased sixteentoM ' weekly; the output of high explosives was sixtyfold ; field guns and howitzers eighteen fold greater than at the beginning of 1915.
