The Council met Inst evening, Present: The Mayor (Mr F. C, Wilson), and Crs. F. Spencer, E Lloyd, A. Way, J, G. Harris. J. H, Miles and J. Hunter. (JORKESPOISDENOB.

From Mrs Oldfield, applying for permission to erect a small office in the coal yards in High Street.—Permission granted On certain conditions beingcomplied with. From Dalgety and Co., Ltd., stating that it would be most inconvenient to use any other entrance than Pukepapa Road for their saieyards on account of stock being accommodated in the adjacent paddocks. From J. Wi son. Grey Street, asking Council to raisu footpath in front of his section. —Attended to. From R B. Kilgonr, asking Council to repair boundary tence between his property and the Waterworks Reserve.—Mr. Spencer to report. From Messrs McCaul, Collins and Christensen, applying for position of borough solicitor. —Resolved (Mayor-v-Mr. Lloyd), That clerk write to solicitors in Marton inviting applications'as borough solicitor. Inspector Pargeter submitted a report ou Abraham and Williams’ saieyards in Marton, and a copy of tbe report is to be forwarded to the firm. Prom the Clerk of Court and Postmaster, Marton, in reference to sewerage fees. —Resolved MCrs. Miles—Way), That an opinion be obtained from Mr Martin with regard to the legality of the claim against the claim against the Departments. The Works Committee recommended forming, kerhing and channelling Bowen Street, and Street.—The recommendation was turned down, The Works Committee recommended that sewerage and water fees be charged for the residence on St. Francis’ Church property.— Agreed to, Crs. Hpnter and Lloyd dissenting. Cr. Lloyd gave notice to move that tbe previous resolution, charging £3 and £2 ou all nurateable property be rescinded, and that the charges be based on the same scale as rateable properties. The matter of purchasing a metre for testing the candle power of the gas manufactured was, on the motion of Crs. Miles—Way, referred to the Gas Works Committee. On tbe motion of the Mayor—Cr. Way, it was decided to write to the superintendent of the National Provident Fund for further particulars in refernce to insuring the borough employees. The overseer reported:—During the past three weeks the usual street maintenance has been carried out.

Footpaths—Have completed High Street from Council Chambers to the Club Hotel and from Bank of New South Wales to Morris’ butcher’s shop. With the continual showery weather we have not got on as well as we should have done. Water.—Mr Shepherd is away on his annual holiday and I have had to send a man to look after the filters. Have got on very well with plastering the face of the dam,'over 1000 yards being finished to date, and have been keeping the water down to the twelve feet level, but with the heavy rain last night it rose to the twenty-three feet level, and the bank is showing no sign of a leak. Sewerage.—During the three weeks I have had the filters washed down weekly and will make a start this week to lay six-inch pipe along Lyon street to Mr jGammou’s, for which he sent cheque of five pounds. I interviewed Mr Winchcombo re the trees in Ross Street Extension, and he would not take them to grub a foot below the ground. Estimate for eight-foot footpath in Bowen Street, kerbing, channelling, grading and four inches of screened metal for a distance of chain, £7 10s per chain, a total of £7l ss. Street, kerbing, channeling, grading and screened metal a distance of 10 chains, £75. The matter of shifting back the kerbing and channelling in High Street from Hodder and Tolley’s to Davenport’s corner was discussed at length, and it was decided on the motion of Cr. Hunter—Mayor, that the alteration be made. Ayes: The Mayor and Crs Hunter, Harris and Way. Noes: Crs, Lloyd, Spencer and Miles.

On the motion of Crs. LloydWay, the Council decided to support Mr E. Newman’s, M.P., proposition with regard to applying to the Government to acquire as a scenic reserve 30 acres of Messrs Gray Bros.’ bush at Upper Tutaenoi.
