CARNARVON.
From Our Own Correspondent. The dairying season in this part has commenced, the Glen Orona Dairy Company having started their Carnarvon creamery last week. Although the weather conditions were particularly unfavourable, there was a satisfactory muster of parents and children at the Carnarvon School, on Wednesday afternoon last, August 2, when Arbor Day celebrations were carried out. The head teacher, Miss McCarthy, and her assistant, Miss Orr, are to be commended for having all the arrangements well in baud. The children were also enthusiastic in bringing trees to plant, and when the Planting was over an informal afternoon tea concluded the proceedings. The necessary good things were most kindly provided by Mesdames Robinson, Hansen (2), Pedley, Gimblet, Doyle and W. Penny, and Mrs J. Hansen was responsible for the tea. Since April last, when the attendance was reinforced by the admission of children from Makowbai, witl all their furniture and other appliances, the Committee has renovated the old school building, and being painted ana famished inside, it makes a comfortable little room for the juniors, though the j space is still too limited. Mr C. Watkins, (chairman), and Mr P. Anderson (member of the Committee), assisted by Master Wm. Giles and Master Jack Dixon, put in may days at this work, which is highly crsditable to them. The next move is in the direction o! erecting a worthy fence, and making a better entrance. To this end, Mr B. S. Penny, ably assisted by others, is arranging for a concept, which will take place on Friday next, August 11, and it is hoped that the parents and other residents who appreciate the presence of a school will do their utmost to ensure success, financially and otherwise. Splendid support is offered from Sanson and Rongotea. Before leaving with the last Reinforcements, Lance-Corpl. Carl Hansen, son of Mr and Mrs J. Hansen, of Carnarvon, received promotion to corporal. The weather summary for Jnly. 1916, was taken at the Clydesdale - School, as follows: The barometer ranged between 38.6 and 30 1. i average pressure 29.5; thermometer, at 9 a. m., from 43 degrees to 55 degrees, average temperature at 9 am., 48.5; rain fell on 12 days, total for mouth 3.12 inches.
