APITI NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent,

Members of the Debating Society expected to hear a good debate ou Thursday night, and they were not disappointed. The subject was “ Are Women more intelligent than Men?” Mrs Berwick took up the cudgels on behalf of her sex, and proved herself an able champion. She alluded to the women who had made their mark in history from Boadicea and Joan of Arc to the late Queen Victoria, and drew attention to the high positions hel-i by women of to-day in American Collages and Universities, Rev. D. McKenzie made a very spirited defence. He showed how woman in all ages had through the inexorable law of the survival of the fittest, been subordinate to man. He referred to the master minds of onr great writers, and to the men who had moulded the destinies of nations. Edison, Marconi and other leading scientists of the day were also utilised. Mrs Matthews, as seconder to Mrs Berwick, gave an interesting paper, whilst Mr Lawson, as supporter of the cause of the lord of creation, proved himself more humorous than convincing. On a vote being taken the fair sex were declared victors. Our footballers are in high feather over their win against Waituna on Saturday. The match was played at Kimbolton, and, being favoured with fine weather and a good ground, the game was thoroughly enjoyed by both teams. Result: Apiti 11, Waituna 9.

Mr H. Walls is presenting a gold medal to the best all-round player for the season In the Apiti Football Club.

When returning from the match on Saturday, a nasty accident befell Mrs S. Nelmes. She was driving in a gig with Mr Nelmes down Fowler’s hill when the horse stumbled. The sudden stop precipitated Mrs Nelmes ou to the road, and the wheel passed over her. She was considerably bruised, and is still suffering from shock.
