SHIPPING CASUALTIES.

The ship Leon Bureau, wheat laden from Adelaide to Falmouth, is waterlogged in Penzance Harbour, as the result of striking a rock in the.Scilly Isles during a fog. The cruiser Sappho, which was fin collision, had 870 men aboard. She was kept afloat during the 18 miles tow by the pumps of the tug that accompanied her.
THE SAPPHO COLLISION. Loudon, Jnne 21. An angular blow amidships shattered the plates below the waterline, making a hole eight feet by fonr. The stokehole filled rapidly and quenched the furnaces. The prompt closing of the collision doors and the crew’s coolness and pluck enabled Commander Christian to each theSappho in Dover harbour. Nobody was injured. Salvage operations have been commenced. The Admiralty anticipate no difficulty in floating the Sappho. She had a nucleus crew. The vessel was taking part in the manoeuvres and was manned by naval reserve and naval volunteers. The Wilson liner Sappho was uninjured and proceededjo Algiers. VESSELS ASHORE. Received June 23, 10.35 a.m. Brisbane, June.,22. The Van Spilbergen is ashore on Newton Island. Her head is on a reef in a sheltered position, A tog is standing by and other assistance has been sent.
The A.U.S.N. Company’s new steamer Malliana, on her maiden voyage, went ashore on Haggenstone Island, near Torres Straits. A tug has been despatched and it is expected she will be refloated.
