The "Engineer reported that the groynes at the intake were finished. It was an effective work as proved •by the divergence of the main current to within'a couple of feet of the Chambers, and reflected much credit on Mr Miohelson. the overseer. The cost had been £lO6 3s 2d. Mr Miohelson would now return to the work on >whioh he had previously been engaged, to provide an outflow from the stop valves and scours. He had -ordered 200 eight-inch glazed pipes, of second quality, to lead off the discharged water as open trenches would'be liable to fall in and would be dangerous to stock. 1 He recommended reinforced con- •* orete pipes 8 feet in diameter to replace old culverts oh Makino Road at a cost of £l2o,—lt was resolved ■.that the question of providing money for this work be considered at next meeting—that is out of loan , money or ordinary income. The Assistant Engineer reported that channelling and kerhing works Were not being pushed on to time. Referring to a statement that too little cement in proportion to gravel was being used on one contract he said his other duties prevented him constantly supervising the mixing. In reference to work to Jbe done in South and other streets he reported that one or more could be kerbed the true grade with wood that had been removed from other streets, and in some concrete could be used, and if the matter was left in his hands he could make a lair job with the money allocated. In some cases concrete kexbing could not be put down without the regrading of the roads. He concluded by stating that should the Oonnoil desire standard levels and bench marks provided, he had the requisite ability to carry out the work. The Town Olerfc reported that he had inspected Warwick Street and now advised that the footpath on the east side he formed, and five yards of gravel per chain spread upon that portion between Queen and West Street. Also that the heaps of spoil be removed to fill a shallow place in Queen Street. The coat would be £BO. The pipes connecting the channel in Manchester Street, at the Intersection of Byre Street, were, too small .to carry off the flood water. A new bridge was required at the foot of the Sandon Road.—lt was decided that the Borough foreman be instructed lio erect the bridge; also that a larger intersection pipe be nut in Jat junction of Eyre and Manohetser Street, and the work in Queen and West Streets be’completed as recommended. Dealing with the Engineer’s reports, it was decided that S. Amon & 00. be granted a month’s extension of time to complete their contract. In regard j;o the replacing of old culverts on Makino Road it was stated that a loan of [£soo had been raised to improve the entrances to the town, and Or. Atkinson proposed this work be done out of this loan money, but on the motion of Or. Tolley it was resolved that the question of allocating the loan money be dealt with at next meeting, The Manchester Street bridge being nearly completed, it was decided to employ Mr Younger, the Inspector at 10s per day to inspect the drainage contract works.
