His father, James Hum. was fined £2 and costs, in default 48 hours. With the aid of the Conciliation Council an agreement has been arrived at in Wellington regarding the hours and wages of carpenters and joiners. It provides for a working week of 45 hours, with a minimum wage of Is 4d per hour. Piece work and sub-letting are prohibited except in case of stairbuilding only. At Christchurch yesterday Peter Georgius Jumino de Warrinner was sent to gaol for 6ne month .as a togas and vagabond. He had been passing himself off as deaf and dumb and ..making house to bouse visitations in the city and suburbs trading on the sympathies of the charitably disposed. He .called at the house of the chief detective, whose wife gave him sixpence, but the chief fallowed him to a hotel and found he could mkae his wants known at the bar .in good audible language, and so his oareer came f. to an end. The man bad been given garden work and began work, bat cleared out as soon as his employer’s back was turned.
An award embodying the agreement regarding female workers in the bootmaking trade has been filed in tbe Arbitration Oornt. It applies to Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago and Southland. Preference is given to unionists, and the hours are 45 per week. Overtime to be paid at”fcbe rate of time and a quarter for the first two honrs, and time and a half afterwards. The maximum wage for females alter five years is £1 7a 6d, wax thread machinists £1 15a, apprentices first year 7s, second year 11s, third year 15s, fourth year 19s, fifth year 23a. The award expires in 1911.
