TAIHAPE NOTES.

From Our Own Correspondent, A man ' named James Ruthven Grant was accidentally killed near Rangitaua ou Thursday piorning, He was one of a party of three engaged road clearing for the Roads Department. An inquest was held at Ohakune on Thursday night before the Coroner for tha district, Mr J. P. Aldridge, who after hearing the evidence of his mates, Messrs W. and John Conway, and Dr. Lachmore, resident surgeon of Ohakune, returned a verdict that deceased was accidentally killed by a falling tree, no blame being -attached to anyone. The evidence showed that deceased and Conway were jacking out a stump about 30 feet from where Henderson was grubbing ia mairie tree, having a lean away from the two mates and being worked to fall with the lean, but for some cause the tree came back. As soon as Henderson saw what was happening he at once sang out to liis mates, who both ran, but deceased ran in the wrong direction, and was struck by part of the falling tree. He was not killed outright, bat died in about half an hour. He is supposed to be a single man, about 53, and is not known to have any relatives in the colony. The |fanoy dress football match, M U..1.0.0.F aganist the Druids Lodge, evoked a good deal of amusement on Thursday < afternoon. The match was won by the Oddfellows. The proceeds were in aid of the hospital fund, which will benefit to the extent of £ll.

The building of the Taihape Hospital is now within measurable distance, as a resolution favourable to its immediate erection was carried by the Hospital Beard at its last meeting. I hope the local committee, Messrs J. JB 1 . btudholme, H. D. Bennett, J. P. Aldridge, A. James and O. L. Dymook, will now get to work and make this much wanted institution an accomplished fact.
