THE HEMP-MARKET.
Per Press Association. N Wellington, June 9. A private cable received from Melbourne somewhat complicates the position of the gbemp market. The chief fibre expert’s view in a report was that during the past fortnight prices offered New Zealand buyers for good fair deliveries to the end of the year have advanced 80s per ton* vie., from £l9 10a to £2l. The High Commissioner’s cable message, under date May 29th, indicated a rise of only 5s per ton and no further rise to the sth June for forward and spot sales on the London market. There are actual inquiries from that quarter at 10s advance, also simultaneously fiom America at £1 higher. The effect of the private cable referred to was that the Manila market had declined another 30s and the price was most likely to rule lower. The offer made was £l9 to £l9 10s for “good fair” f.o.b. Wellington, and according to grade points. Onlookers experience considerable embarrassment in connection with the reports of the state of the hemp market that are at present in circulation.
