AUSTRALIANS v. HAMPSHIRE. United Press Association. —By. Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received June 8, 8.55 a.m. London, June 7. A downpour of rain yesterday delayed the start till 3.25. The weather at the opening was dull, and tiie wicket soft. The attendance was 1000. The County made an unpropitious start, as Bowell succumbed to the second ball in the first over, Gregory, at cover point, taking an easy catch off Laver. One for 1. Mead and White steadied things. White knocked three fours off one over of Laver’s. The second wicket went at 26. Mead starting cautiously soon developed strong driving. Llewellyn made a poor display and took 40 minutes to make 9. The third wicket was down at 62, the fourth at 78, and the fifth at 89. Evans lost his wicket in playing hack to Laver. Lee followed and placed the first ball he received into Bardsley’s hands at mid-on. This left the total unaltered; Mead ended a fine steady innings lasting two»honrs by sending a skyer back to Whitty. Seven for 90. A welljudged catch by Hartigan at longon off Laver disposed of Brown at 109, and at the same total Laver captured the ninth wicket. The innings lasted 170 minutes. Scores HAMPSHIRE.—First Innings.
