FOOTBALL.

Press Association. < Wellington, Jane 3. The first intefprovincial match -of the season, Wellington against Wanganui, took place to-day, and attracted a large crowd. The first half of the game was very interesting and close, ending in favour of Wellington by 6 points to 3. The second half, however, was exceedingly dreary play, being confined wholly to Wanganui’s half. The home team ran up 23 points in this spell, eventually winning by 38 to 3. RANGITIKEI v. WANGANUI. This match took place at Wanganui yesterday and for the first time in the history of the Sub-Union, Wanganui suffered defeat on their own ground by 9 points to 4. Rangitikei was represented by its full strength, and they put up a splendid fight and both forwards and backs, to a man, played good football Their fine dribbling rushes frustrated the efforts of the fast Wanganui backs and the visitors easily held the opposing pack in check. It was a fast game and play was interesting throughout. McLean (Hunterville) and Signall (Marton) scored cleverly, and the latter player kicked a fine goal from almost halfway, and at a difficult angle.. The visitors were hospitably entertained.
