FEILDING FIRE BOARD.

The' annual meeting was held vessterday afternoon Present: Messrs J. W. B. Trewiu, A. Williamson, E. Got.iibebere. W. A. • JL». Bailey, O. E. Ewen, J. J. Mallard and R. M. Simpson. Mr E. Goodbehexe was elected chairman.

The Saperiuteuuent, Mr G. H. Saywell, reported that there had been only nine fires during the year, of which two were serious, one building having been totally destroyed. The strength of the Brigade was 22, and the members were '-effective. He advised that the system of fixe alarm was inadequate. The Manchester street bell should be moved to near the State School, and a new bell should be acquired, to be worked by water power, over the Brigade station, and the bell now over the station shonld be moved to the west side of the town.

The question of obtaining a new bell was held over uqtil the proposed new fire station has been erected. The balance-sheet submitted showed a credit balance of £225 13s 3d.

It waa'ieaolved to lay aside £2OO of this amount towards the cost of a section for the Brigade station. Estimates for expenditure during the year were agreed to as follows: —Superintendent’s salary £4O, Deputy’s £2O, Secretary’s £35, wages and boot money for firemen £4O, lent of station £2O, horse hire £25, new plant and uniforms £6O, petty cash £5, telephones £7 10s, accident insurance £lO, subscription U.F.B.A £2 10s, lighting £5, land and bnildngs £3OO, with a total of £460. It was resolved that in case of a'fire where the Fire Board that there are reasons for an inquiry, a request be made to the coroner to hold one.

The superintendent (G. H. Saywell) and the deputy (W. J. Jones) were reappointed at the same salaries, namely £4O and £2O respectively.

\ The matter of accident insurance was left to the Chairman.

The appointment of a turncock was left to the Chairman, the opinion having been expressed duty could be undertaken by a member jor members of the Brigade, under direction Superintendent. On the motion of Mr Trewin, seconded by Mr Goodbshere: It was resolved that the Board express gits appreciation of the valuable services of Mr F. Pirani to the Board while acting as secretary and chairman of the Board.
