The London Shipping Gazette of March 14th says:—“An artist with a sympathetic brush may find a telling subject in the tragic incident recorded in connection with the sinking of the foreign sailing ship Margretha. All the way from Iquique she had laboured homewards with her nitrate cargo. She had reached the German Ocean, whoa at night she was wounded to the death by a Norwegian steamer. On board the Margretha were the captain’s wife and child. Whether the terrorstricken crew had lost ail sense of gallantry or of pity we know not. We only know that nine of their number got into one of the boats, and that their last view of tbe'deoka of their old ship showed |tbeir captain holding out his little child and imploring thereto save it. They say the ship was sinking, and that they feared she would engulf their boat if they came near enough for the child to be tossed to them. We must, we suppose, believe them. And, after all, are the lives of nine foreign seamen in the heyday of existence to be measured against that of a skipper’s chili? All the same we are somehow glad to think that they were not Britishers in that boat. Had they been they would have saved the child or perished in the attempt.” For Children’s Hacking Cough at night, Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, Is 6d and 2s 6d.
