Wellington, April 23.

A letter from the Premier In reference to a resolution passed by the Council with regard to the exertion wage on Otira tunnel contract, was read at the Trades Council meeting last night. The Prime Minister said there was no intention on the part cf the Public Works Department to interfere in the matter between the contractors and their employees so iong as the contractors paid the Arbitration Court pward wages. It was inoubment upon the Labour Department to see that such wages were actually paid. The decision come to in the matter was arrived at only after it had been fully considered. The President of the Council described the reply ae another shuffle. After ... discussion the following lesolution was carried That this Council expresses dissatisfaction with communications received from the Prime Minister with respeot to the matter of the exertion wage and considers that Government should, stipulate in all contracts that no exertion wage whatever would bo ■! permitted.
