ALL RED ROUTE.
A SOCIALIST MINISTER. United Press Association.- —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received April 16, 9.40 a.m. Melbourne, April 16. The Postmaster-General, referring toJJCanada’s suggestion for an All Red Route Conference, declared that so far as he was concerned the vessels mnst be Government owned. Government realised that the work of building the various parts of the Empire together more closely can be done properly and •* adequately by Government themselves. He favoured something being done by way of preferential trade relations between Canada and Australia.
The Hon. Millar, interviewed regarding the cablegram received this morning, said it simply meant that there is no chance of Australia going into the'All Red service outlined by Canada. It must affect New Zealand to a considerable extent, berceuse the amount of subsidy proposed to be received from Australia will not be forthcoming and will require to be borne by Britain, Canada and New Zealand. Because there is nothing in the proposals as submitted that the steamers shall be owned by the Govrenmeuts, the Commonwealth has already entered into mail arrangements for which six vessels are to be built and there is little chance of Government undertaking the construction for an All Red service.
