LOST PEARLS.
£IO,OOO THEFT AT A BALL. New York, February 25. Fashionable society at San Francisco has been excited by the theft .of a £IO,OOO necklace belonging to Miss Jennie Crocker, a beautiful and wealthy heiress; well-known both in New York and California. , . Miss Crocker was a guest last evening at a ball given by Mrs Ohatles Alexander, which was attended by the so-called “foar hundred, of the]West. Not until 4 o’clock this morning, as the dancing ended, did Miss Crocker discover the theft. The stolen necklace is one of the most valuable articles of jewellery in the country. It is composed of 53 pearls, all flawless specimens -brought to America from Europe some years ago. Scores of detectives are working on the case, which, it. is believed, will reach a startling climax in view of the suspected presence in Californian society of an aristocratic “Raffles” of nnique canning.
