Wairoa reports that Rna, with a large party, is at Samoto to-day en route to Nnhaka. The ferry boat Maitariki recently built at Auckland, has been burnt .alongside Portobello wharf. Everything on board was right when the man who slept on board turned in at ten o’clock. He was awakened three hours later and found the. boat on fire. Attempts were made to drag the blazing vessel^into deep water and sink her, but the water was too shallow and she was bnrqt to the water’s edge. The Matariki, which was a new boat, cost £5000,'. and was insured .for £BOOO in the New Zealand Office, who are reinsured in two other offices. At Thames William Reid, aged 18 years, met his .death # in a strange manner. Last night ho, with.souio friends, went out on the Hauraki Gulf on a fishing excursion. On the return voyage he wont to bed iu the cabin and appeared iu the best of health. When the launch arrived at Thames Reid was fouml“dead and medical assistance' was summoned, but life was pronounced extinct. The, doctor expressed his opinion that death was caused by inhalation of benzine fumes. AuotherpaFsenper said he felt ill, which he believed was caused in cue same way.
