The barque Blenheim has arrived, after being 14 days out from Devonport, Tasmania. She experienced terrible weather, all the sails being carried away. She thrice narrowly escaped being wrecked on a lee shore. The crew were unable to take their clothes off the whole time. Calcutta, April 9. The newspaper Statesman suggests that Lord Kitchener should be Earl Minto’s successor, owing to his practical knowledge of India andjhis keen insight into the administration problems. London, April 9., The West India, Committee states that quantities of plain spirits mixed with a small proportion of rum are being exported to the Colonies as rum, and asks the Australian Customs to assist in stopping a practice which seriously injuries the West Indies industry.
Shipbuilding returns show that the ships under construction in Britain at the end of March represented 65,000 more tonnage compared with the- same date in 1908. A dock fire at Millwall resulted in damage estimated at £70,000. It was started by a boy jokingly putting a lighted cigarette into a package of jute.
The steamer Hero, from Bristol, collided with and sank the destroyer Blaokwater, off Dungeness, during the night. The crew was saved.
* Referring to the Greenwich case, Mr Taverner, Victorian AgentGeneral, explains that the Imperial Government holds that the use of such terms as “Burgundy ’ and “Bordeaux” with the word “Australian” is legitimate, and does not conflict with the Madrid Convention of 1891. The French Ambassador has been informed accordingly. The 'Home Office has arranged a scheme of physical drill and gymnastics daily for prisoners between 16 and 21 years of age. Special instruction in useful industries is also to be afforded.
