At Mar ton Court to-day. before Mr Kerr, S.M., a case of interest to licensed batchers was heard. H. T. Manning was charged by W. Dalgleish, Stock Inspector of Hnnterville , with allowing swine to be at large within 50 yards of his slaughter house. Evidence went to show that four pigs ' were running at large within the prescribed distance of the slaughtering area, and that they had access to raw offal —a distinct breach of the Act. The defence set np was (bat although every precaution had been taken the pigs had broken through a substantial fence and that the raw offal would not have been there if the copper had been in working order. It was being repaired at the time. Defendant had a man regularly employed at the yards, but it was during bis absence the alleged breach of the Act occurred. His Worship said it was well-known that pigs having access to raw bffal were a fruitful source of disease and that legislation bad been introduced to guard against this practice. It had been shown in this case that the breach jjhad not been of a wilful nature, yet defendant was still liable. .He felt that a minimum fine would meet the case as the offence carried an endorsement of the license—as it, was a second offence under the Slaughtering Act—and be would fine defendant ss, and costs.
