"ARRESTED” AS A JOKE.
Two university students, a reporter, and a detective who could see a joke, played a mean trick on a couple | wbo came to Minneapolis from Litchfield to be quietly wedded. It was this way. The principals, John Harmon and Miss Bessie Peterson, both of Litchfield, and long ago decided to be married. They are both popular in Litchfield, and knew what their fate at the hands of some of their friends in that village would be if the ceremony took place there. Consequently, accompanied by Howard McClure and Miss Nellie Crosby, best man and bridesmaid, they came to the mill city to be quietly married. Some of their friends, who couldn’t bear to see them get away so easily, sent word of their arrival to Foster, Arthur Weeks, and two university students from Litchfield. Foster procured a “fake” telegram, and gave it to a detective, who waited for the train. As tbe party got off the detective, laid this hand on Mr Harmon’s shoulder, ’You’re wanted for embezzlement,” he said. Mr Harmon argued. “There must he some mistake,” he said. The detective was obdurate. Mr Harmon waxed wroth. He was vehement. “Sorry,” said the detective, “but you’ll have to come with me.” Enter Mr Foster and the other tormentors as the party left tbe depot. They rushed up and offered to vouch for Mr Harmon, and the party went to the Thompson drug store, at Fourth-street and Nicollet Avenue, where the plotters disappeared and, the detective allowed ‘the bridal party to escape. They then went to Merriam Park, where they were quietly married.
