WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
At the monthly meeting there were present: Messrs Pirani (chairman), Dixon, Purnell, Aldridge, Cargill, Guthrie, Bennett and Fraser. The following resignations were acceptedL. (sole teacher), Kaukatea; E. T. Casey (assistant), Matapu; M. Scott (assistant), Terrace End ; P. Gilligan (pnpil teacher), Kapouga; J. Niven (special assistant), Hawera D H.S. A letter was received from M. Reid (assistant), Taonui, applying for position as relieving teacher.— Noted. \
Mr Johnston was eppointed to the vacancy at Marton. Leave with pay warranted to the following F. A. Howie (Patawanui) to attend Training College; M. B. Jenkinson (Eitham) to Bth April; B. Anderson (Utiku), 9 days; H, S. Silcock (Mount View) to 30th April ; A. McLanghlin (Queen’s Park), 6 days; P. E. Ingpen (Hunterville), to 23nd April; J. Gordon (Wanganui), 3 days; W. A. Lyon (College Street), one week; M. Miles (St. John’s), one week: L. Thompson (Mangatoki), four days from Arpil 13th.
Requests from Tokaora, Brunswick, Rangataua, Wanganui (shelter shed), Eltham (subsidy), and Okaiawa (tanks) were held over pending investigation. Resolved to offer Mr Cleaver 10s a chain for fencing done at Hantapu. Resolved to insure caretakers of schools and to inform the committees of this proposal.. It was agreed to supply desks at Makowhai School.
Resolved to apply to the Department for a grant for the enlargement of porch at Hunterville School. Resolved to grant a week at Easter to Hiwinni School, this week to be deducted from mid-winter, holidays. Although there are an equal number of prospective European and native pupils to attend a school at Ohutu, the Native Schools’lnspector wrote declining to recommend that a school be opened there. The Department wrote declining to increase [grants for teachers’ residences at Taoroa and Pnkeokahu. The Department wrote granting increased rent allowance for Clydesdale Hall from £ls to £35, also declining to make a grant for teacher’s residence at Carnarvon.
A letter was received from Chief Engineer of New Zealand Railways, declining to recognise Board’s claim for £SO compensation for land taken for railway purposes at Rata.—Claim co be renewed.,
Resolved to ask the Department for grant for secondary department at Taihape, to erect a bath at residence at Montoa, and to supply all schools with district maps.
Mr Aldridge was asked to report on the proposed school ,at Bennett’s siding.
