Mr Tuck, Webb’s backer, lodged £IOO with the editor of the Herald to-day, challenging Arnst, on behalf of Webb, to row for the championship of the world and £SOO a side: The Health Department prosecuted a Wellington pork bntcher to-day for selling meat unfit for human consumption. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £3 and costs £4 14s. Hastings reports that Mrs G. P. Donnelly, who has been seriously ill some time, is in a most critical state. She,'however, spent a very peaceful quiet night. The Waian Hotel, which wA crowded with visitors, was destroyed by fire on '‘Sunday morning. There were many narrow escapes, but no lives were lost. Val Yousden, a well-known entertainer, jumped from the balcony, escaping injury, with the exception of slight burns on the body. Edward Morgan, Normanbv, was found lying beside the fireplace this morning dead. Last night at 9 o’clock was apparently in his usual state of health, although he complained of a pain in the chest. The position of the body suggested that deceased had fallen when m the act of preparing breakfast. Deceased was 70 years of age, and unmarried. He had been in different parts of the district for 80 years! On Friday afternoon, Mr Francis Birtles, the Australian cyclist, left Wellington for Auckland on his bicycle. The journey north he intends to make quietly, observing the nature of the road on his way: He will pass through Taihape, Ofcakune, and Te Kuiti, and expects to reach the Rudge Depot at Auckland on Wednesday morning.
