Professor Eliot, President of Harvard University, declines to accept the position of American Ambassador in London on the grounds of age. London, April 4. In consequence of criticism of Lloyds, members submitted to an official audit, with the result that 98 per cent, were certified good for ail their liabilities. The audit showed that millions wore deposited with the committee by members as security fcr contingent liabilities. Sydney, April 4, The Ichunga has arrived from South Africa. The doukeyman died of malarial fever, and four of the crew are ill with the same disease. Obituary : T. R. Allt, chairman of the North Coast Steamship Company, who recently returned from a visit to New Zealand. A five at Gobar destroyed Ward, Russell and Co.’s premises. The damage is estimated at £15,000.
