Per Press Associations Invercargill, March 30. Giving evidence before the Timber Commission. Mr O. A. Pipftr, Railway Traffic Manager, said imported timber was charged at a rate and a half. The qnantitv imported at Bluff in 1907 was 838,000 feet, in 190 S 1,089,000, including 60,000 feet cf Oregon, which came to the Bluff, Mr James Leggat, sawmiller, said that one shilling per 100 feet was not a fair return to millers, and they cannot get an area without going long distances. He favoured a 'duty on imported timber. More than two-thirds of the mill^were in hill country, and the proportion df red pine was small. Seaward bnsli was almost worked out. It was the best in the South Island.
