Mr O. H. lies, newly-appointed statinnmaster at Feilding, has commenced duty. Mr lies comes frbm Lincoln, Canterbury. • Christchurch reports that an elderly widow, Helen Maty Kidder, of St. Albans, died in bed early this morning.

Miss Parker, whose death by drowning is reported from Gisborne, was a niece of Mr J. Nortfcover, cf Marton. At Palmerston S.M. Court to-day Frederick Hupe, porter at the Royal Hotel, was charged with having attempted to burn down the hotel, and was remanded for a week. Maurice John Collins and Thomas Matthews were charged at Wellington Magistrate’s Court to-day, the former* with unlawfully making spirits, and Matthews with being found on the premises where illicit distillation was being carried on. A remand till Monday was granted, with bail in two sureties of £SO each. v At *tbe. Magistrate’s Court, Gisborne, G. Barton, runner-np to the Hon. Carroll at the recent general election, was charged with committing an illegal practice by paying money on account of hire of vehicles for the conveyance of electors on the day of .the sceond ballot. It was stated that the case, if substantiated, would, have to go to the Supreme - Court for trial. An adjonrnmant till Monday was granted bn the application of the defence.

At Napier Supreme Court Hermann Longsdorf was convicted on two charges of false pretences, and sentenced to three years. Prisoner’s police record extends over a very considerable period. William Middlemiss was convicted of an aggravated assault on Hugh Sands at Kaikora, whereby the latter’s jaw was broken, and was.admitted to twelve months’ probation, being ordered to pay the costs of prosecution, and £2O t* Sands. Sir J. Mills in. a circular to masters of the U.S.S. Fleet, states that the impression is quite unwarranted that the Company insists upon rigid adherence to time-table, causing masters to take risks. He urges them that fche safety of lives and property must always be the first consideration and expresses the Company’s complete in the masters.

Many ratepayers will be pleased to learn that they can have tbfe advantage of his services. His record in public life warrants the firm belief that he will ba the right man in the right place. While chairman of the Sangitikei Oonuty Council his ability and progressiveuess were conspicuous. As one of the largest ratepayers in Merton he is interested in keeping down the rates, as well as in aiding the progress of the Borough. A requisition to Mr Beckett embodying the ■ same request is being largely' signed*
