CORRESPONDENCE From Auckland City Council, re amendment to Local Bodies Loans Act.—No action taken. From F. Gillett, stating that plan of land taken from part section 20 and 22 for road had been completed. From H, Feildes, Apiti, asking for cheque in place of one stolen from Apiti Hotel on August 16th, and in favour of J. Webb for £4 10s.-—Agreed to on the Council being indemnified against loss. From VV. Q. Viles, asking to be allowed to place bis fence on edge of road formation.—Consent given. From Kiwitea County Council, with statement of claim in respect to the Terrace Road. —Clerk to request the Kiwitea Council to forego the claim seeing that the road is in the Kiwitea County. Frond William Hunt, ’Raumai, offering to erect the chains of fencing to the land purchased from him, for the sum of £lo. Accepted. From; James Matthews, Apiti, asking for a donation towards technical education at Apiti,—No -action taken, attention having been drawn to the fact that: the Council had already decided that there was no money available for the purpose. From Treasury, stating that application for £2OO on loan raised for erection of bridge at Marten Block crossing would receive immediate attention. From Hugh Osborne, asking that •. road be repaired in front of New Zealand Loan and Mercantile yards, Apiti.—Referred to Councillor for the Riding and the Engineer. REPORTS. Tiie Treasurer reported the balances at the Bank 1 on the Ist: —General fund cr. £723 16s lOd, loan account cr. £450 Is 3d. Balances of Riding account: Awahon or. £7l 35s 3d, „ Coal Creek or. £9 2s 6d, Mangapikopiko cr. £137 7s lid, Pohangiua or. £79 14s 6d, Mangaone dr. £156 11a 13d, Tamaki dr. £284 7s 3d, Umtuoi dr. £714 9a lid. The rates for the current year, amounting to £6383 15s Bd, has bo;u collected. This is the third year in succession that I have been able to v report a clean sheet. Accounts amounting fo £541 15*; Od axe being submitted for payment.— Satisfaction was expressed at this result. Tiie Engineer reported in respect to the Awabou Riding that the fence on the top road would be completed that day. He recommended the acceptance of W. Hunt’s offer to fence the new road. Mangapikopiko Riding, Blixt and Son had commenced their contract on the Norsewood Road. In the Pobangina Riding the Pohangina Road required to bo repaired. 1. Grammar had finished his contract in the Tamaki Riding, and two men had been employed to break stones. The groyne at Piripiri, in . the Umutoi, would be attended to in a few days. The Council’s team was at work repairing the Makiekie Road in this Riding, and other repairs were being done. He ..recommended that a 1000-gallon tank.be purchased for Council yard, and .a 600-gallon one to he placed at the Council Office at a total cost of £ll 2s 6d. The construction of Finnis’ track, a length of 91 chains, bad been oompleted, at a cost of £269 IGs l(^® in f £3O 10a below his estimate.' Tenders had been called .twice, when the lowest tender received was £4OO, ana the highest £ll2B 18s, consequently he had carried ont the work by day considered this a very satisfactory result of day labour. The recommendations of cne Engineer were adopted. Or. Wagstaff drew the attention of the 'Engineer to the necessity of cleaning out the Pohangina Township drains. OTHER BUSINESS. It was resolved— ' That (Ors. Bailey—Bglmton) the Engineer he instructed to regrade tbe lower 1 end of Bell’s track and spend about £lO in the forming of tbe road. . m : . That (Ors/Borne— Wagstaff) the tender of L. T. Harland & Go. for contract No. 144, namely, carting and breaking 10C0 yards of gravel at Is lOd, per yard, he accepted. That (Ors. Howie—Brown) T. Bird be granted five years of part xeserve No. 78, block 210, Pohangina [at £2 10s per year. . , The application of Mr O.
