HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.

Per Press Association. Wellington, March'l4. Following is the cablegram from the High Commissioner dated March 13th;— The mutton market is depressed. There is scarcely any demand :;and supplies are increasing. Canterbury which is offering in moderate quantities is;‘quoted"at 3%d, North Island 3d, Australian 33^d. The lamb market is very dull, the weather lately having been unfavourable to the sale of lamb. This season’s Canterbury lamb is quoted- at other than Canterbury 4>gd, Australian The large supply of Home killed mutton affects the market.

The beef market is steady. New Zealand beef is being pnsfaed for the sale. Forequarters are quoted at 3%d, hindquarters which are in moderate supply 2>£d. The butter market is quiet with smull business doing. Some holders are forcing sale. The demand is chiefly for high grade unsalted butter. Choicest New Zealand brands are quoted at 106 s, Danish 115 s, Australian 108 s, Siberian 103 s, Argentine 105 s.

The cheese market remains firm.Coloured makes are quoted at 645. White makes at 60s per cwt. The hemp market closes weak with a lower tendency in prices. Current quotations ’are : Good fair ’grade on spot £2B 10s, fair grade on spot £2l 15s, fair current Manila on spot £2B. April-June shipments: good fair grade £23 ss, fair grade £2l 10a, fair current Manila £22. Last week’s Manila output amounted to 28,000 bales. j The wool market is firm with an upward tendency. Bradford tops are quoted as follows : 36’s (low crossbreds) Is %d, 44’s (medium crossbreds) la (quarterbreds) Is 7d, 60’s (merinos) 2s.

The following shipments arrived from River Plate during the month of February: London, 159,195 mutton, 42,996 lamb; Liverpool, 111,334 mutton, 26,678 lamb; Hull,'“10,210 mutton, 8345 lamb; Cardiff, 10,483 mnttou, 8699 lamb: Southampton, 11,921 mutton, 4725 lamb; Newcastle ,”8438 mutton, 4000 lamb.
