AN INCIDENT IN THE DOOM OF MESSINA.
(Prom the Mail, January 11th)
I dreamt my love, she called me, yet alive Beneath that monstrous heap of shattered stone; Wherefore, with pickaxe each, we sweat and strive To reach her in that darkness all alone;
Until there came a fear, lest starry night Should, ere we’d reached v her, close upon the day, * And in that sickening horror of affright As men possessed we fought and fought our way:
At last we heard a voice, low, frail, but clear— One In a thousand voices unto me— With frantic effort we broke though, in fear Lest ebbing life was all that we sbonld see: She knew me as in night’s approaching gloom I drew her forth from out that living tomb. ' A.Y.T.
