RAETIHI NOTES.
From Our Own Corespondent,
On Wednesday evening a public welcome was tendered to the Rev. O. M. Stent, who has just arrived from England to take up his duties as Vicar of the Anglican Church in the Waimanno. The ball was well filled, a considerable number of visitors having come in from outlying places. Mr F. Loveday, chairman, introduced the guest of the evening. Mr Stent, In replying, spoke feelingly of the kindness which had Invariably been shown him since his arrival, and expressed the utmost confidence in regard to the future progress of the church in the district, and also in regard to his own relations ‘with his parishioners. During the. evening musical items were contributed by the following ladies and gentlemenMr and Mrs Malpas (duet), Misses Campbell and Robson (duet), Messrs Weller, Butler, and Mrs Pearce (Ohaknne) trio; also solos by Hall and Pearce, and Miss Robson and Messrs Stevenson, Hall, SWeller, Butler and Worthy. Accompaniments were played by Mesdames Gould, Butler and Miss Robson. During the evening refreshments provided by the ladies’ committee, were banded round. The singing of the “National Anthem” brought a most enjoyable evening to a .close. On St. Patrick’s Day the Raetihi Branch of the Foresters’ Lodge will hold their first annual sports meeting. Considerable interest is being taken in the meeting, and a good number of nominations have been received. '
On the evening of that day the Presbyterian Church purpose giving a concert, at which a number of well-known musical people from other parts will contribute. These include Mr Bathgate (Dunedin Orchestral Society), Mrs Grant (Leeds Musical Festival), Miss Ethel Nison (Nelson School of Music), Mr J. J. Monfries (Dunedin), Miss Gladys Nixon (Nelson), and Mies E. Nixon violinist. Several local favourites are also taking part. So far Raetihi’s knowledge of the eruption of Mt. Ngaurnhoe has been gained principally from outside newspapers, there having been no disturbance of any kind here, beyond a slight shook of earthquake about a week ago, which seems to have been felt in many places of the Dominion. The smoke of bush fires has prevented much being seen of Ruapehu and Ngaurohoe lately. No volcanic dust or ash has fallen here.
