TIMBER COMMISSION.

Wellington, March 9, The Government has appointed the following Commission to investigate matters concerning the timber industry:—Messrs T. Y. Duncan, M.P. (chairman), F. J. Arnold, M.P., W. H. P. Barber, of Wellington, S. J, Clarke (Auckland), H. G. Ell, M. P., W. H. Field, M. P., J. A. Hanan, M.P., W. T. Jennings, M.P., W. B. Leyland (Auckland), F. Mander, M.P., W. Morris (Greymouth), and J. Stall worthy, ,M. P. The Commission is to inquire i into the following matters with respect ♦o New Zealand timber : 1. Cost of felling. 2. Cost of cutting at mill. 3. Price when sold by mill fo (a) consumer, (b) middelman, (o) retailer. • • 4. Price when sold byvmiddleman to.(d) consumer, (e) retailer. 5. Areas of Crown land held for milling under the Land Act or State Forests Act, showing licensees’ names and acreage held. 6. Estimated area of Crown land still available for sawrailling, but not taken, with details regarding districts and area. With respect to Oregon timber—7. Extent of importations and effect on local market and industries. 8. Its landed cost, showing freight and charges separate from cost price. 9. Its price'when sold by importer to (a) consumer, (b) middleman, (o) retailer, and generally any matters which in the Commission’s opinion injuriously affect the timber and timber building industries or would promote their development, include ing the necessity or exnedieuoy of legislation on the sbajeot. The Commission is to sit at Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch, Greymoutb, Wellington, Ohristooroh, Greymouth, Wellington, Tai : hapo, and Auckland, and to report by May 31st.
