APITI NOTES.
From Our Own Correspondent. The different classes in connection with the Technical School com menced their term last week, and are being well supported. Instruction is being given in English, arithmetic, drawing and painting, dressmaking and woodwork. Several donations have already been made. An unfortunate accident occured to Mr Ruthe’s butcher’s cart on Monday, Whilst driving down the Cove Creek Hill on the Norsewood road, the block supporting the spring became detached through a bolt snapping. The wheel slewed around, the horse took fright and bolted. Unable to stop the maddened animal, and seeing destruction ahead, the driver leaped off. Continuing on its wild career for a couple of chains the horse came to a sudden stop by shooting over: the bank. The cart was smashed to splinters, while prime beef and tender mutton lay broadcast on the landscape. The horse escaped with a few bad cuts. On picking himself ont of the dnst, the driver oould find no injury excepting a torn stocking. The Chamber of Commerce met last week and elected a Council consisting of: President, P. McConnell, Esq. ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Yiles and J. Deoke; Secretaiy and Treasurer, Mr J. P. Clark; Members of Council, Messrs F. S. Rumbold, G. Fields, A. Gibson, G. P. Russell and W. McKay. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Postal Department, asking that a light be placed after dark in the letter box lobby, as the present method of striking matches was a scarce cf inconvenience and danger. Also that the mail box be cleared again at 2 p.m. so that letters addressed locally and posted after 9 a.m. would reach their destination ou the same day. Steps are also to be taken to see if arrangements can be made to delay the departure of the mail till 9.30 a.m.
Qnit3 a number of business people and residents are having the telephone installed, and the erection of posts, fixing of wires, etc., has lately given the place a very animated appearance.
