The Hon. C. H. Mills has been “called” to the Legislative Council. William Porter was to-day fined £SO and costs for sly grog-selling in the Ashburton district. At Auckland Police Court to-day a young man, Thomas Hammond, was remanded to Wanganui on a charge of forging an endorsement to a cheque. Mr James W. Marchbanks, engineer to the Wellington-Manawatu Railway for several years past, has been selected out of 44 applicants for the position of engineer to Wellington' Harbour Board at a salary of £IOOO.
The 800 yards stage of the Nelson Match started in a hrhk right rear wind, which told upon the shooting of Boys. The Auckland tyro, so far, tops the range score with an “all but” and is top scorer in the match with 98. Soper (Tuamarina) is runner-up with 9fi, having made 4 at 500, and 47 at 809 Milroy is 95, Ching (Lyttelton) 94. At the Supreme Court at Gisborne in the case of Joseph “Hannon for alleged horse stealing, accused was discharged, the Judge stopping the case owing to the contradictory nature of the evidence of the principal witness , whom his Honour severely lectured for insobriety. Norman McLeod, convicted of hcxse stealing was sentenced to two vears. In the charge of burglary against Edward Boniface, the jury failed to agree and were discharged. James Straker Jackson, convicted of assault, was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.
A man named Samuel Oamptiell died in Dunedin itospitsl last nigiit under remarkable circumstances. On Monday evening he was found in the street in an unconscious condition, but the arrived at the conclusion that the man was suffering from intoxication and arrested him. Next morning it was found impossible to arouse him to bring him before the court and after medical advice bad been obtained he was removed to the hospital, where it was discovered that he was suffering from hemorrhage of the brain. Deceased did not recover consciousness after the accident, which is believed to be due to a fall on the pavement. “SUOROSINE” FED.
