AUSTRALIA AND CHINESE.

The Minister for Defence, speaking at a banquet, said there were many matters where an agreement was required hy Australia upon a common method cf working fwitb other nations. Considerable energy hadjreen displayed in preventing the smuggling in of Chinese, but he altogether deprecated anti-Chinese feeling which would work nothing but injury to themselves. Australia was too proud and too big a nation for snob prejudices. The present Government were strongly adverse to any differential treatment of any portion of the citizens of Australia. Though they intended to prevent *as far as possible an anti-Ohinese-feeling, Government were determined that the immigration and quarantine aws should not he set at nought.
