Mr O. R. Cooke, Marion, has received word that his brother, Mr F. R. Cooke, was a passenger by the ill-fated Penguin, and was drowned. The body has not yet been recovered. Archibald McNeil, the habitual criminal who escaped from gad and was recaptured, was to-day sentenced at Wellington to one year’s imprisonment, ordered to be kept in close confinement for 14 days, and to lose six months* marks. J A sudden death took place at Pukerau yesterday, when Charles O’Hagan expired, presumably from heart disease, while transacting business in a carpenter’s shop. He was an old resident of the district, having been a settler for thirty years. No inquest will be necessary. In the Divorce Court at Wellington O. D. Henry obtained a decree nisi for dissolution of marriage twith Alice Henry. Petitioner was granted custody of the children. A defence had been filed by defendant, but it was withdrawn. The case was heard in camera.
