In a colliery explosion at West Stanley pit, Durham, 140 were entombed. A tongue Of flame destroyed the shafting, leaving no egress. Rappings have since been heard suggesting that men in one of the four seams are still alive. 110 LIVES LOST. Received February 18, 8.50 a.m. Of the 147 entombed in West Stanley Colliery 37 have been rescued. It is feared the remainder have •perished. The majority of the survivors were saved through remaining in a byway until tno gases had • cleared away. Many bodies were badly burned and mutilated.
