Per Press Association. Wellington, February 12. Judgment was given to-day in compensation case Bayliss and others v. City Council, a claim for £15,947 arising out of Council taking land at Island Bay for tbe purpose of making a recreation ground. The Court awarded claimants £2925. Auckland, February 12. An old man, named William Monaghan, who last session was fined ou a charge of having used certain slanderous statements in respect to John A. Martin, appealed to answer a charge of perjury arising out of the original case. He was found guilty, recommended to mer.y on account of his age, and fined £SO. Christchurch, February 12.
At the Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr Y. G. Day, S.M., Hugh B. Bower claimed £2 from Theophilus Best for committing a breach of the Christchurch tailoring award in working for £2 7s Gd instead of £2 15s per week as the award provides. Defendant was fined 10s. Bower claimed £lO from O. Andrews & Co. for breach of the same award in employing two apprentices. The firm was also charged ’ with breaches of award in resnect of Best and a fine of 40s without costs was inflicted in each case.
