River Plate mutton is in large supply and is being strongly pushed for sale at 2%d. Canterburymutton is quoted at and North Island at 3%d. Buyers are not inclined to make forward purchases of mutton at present prices. The lamb market is quiet and there is dull sale for all brands. This season’s Canterbury lamb is quoted at 5%d, Australian 4d, River Plate 4d. The beef market is falling; supplies are increasing. Hindquarters are quoted at forequarters 2%d. The butter market is steady aud fair business is doing. Current quotations: Choicest New Zealand Ills, Danish 118 s, Australian 107 s, Argentine 107 s, Siberian 102 s. The cheese market is firm and there is a better demand. White makes are quoted at 60s, coloured owing to short supply 625. The hemp market continues dull. Current quotations are : Good fair grade on spot £24 10s, fair grade on spot £22 10s, fair current Manila on spot £23 10s; Jauuary-March shipments good fair grade £24, fair giade £22, fair current Manila £22 10s. Last week the Manila output amounted to 26,000 bales. The stock of hemp held in London is 239 tons. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet. Buyers are not keen to do business until they receive New Zealand reports. The wool market has been very irregular but closed firm. The following shipments arrived from River Plate during the month of January: Loudon, mutton 57,631, lamb 69,231 ; Liverpool, mutton 115,902, lamb 3,155; Hull, mutton 9199, lamb 135; Cardiff, mutton 322, lamb 95. Batter to Loudon and Southampton 918 and 48 cwts respectively.
