Mrs Brooks, whose hnsbaud committed suicide at Maori Hill last uight, was removed to a private hospital this morning and will oe unable to give evidence at the inquest tomorrow. What was at first thought to be a bruise on her cheek has proved to be a■ ballet wound, bat it is not of a dangerous nature. Invercargill, February 1. George Wilson, Maged 20, son of Joseph a farmer at Tewareware, was drowned while bathing in rhe Waian river on Sunday afternoon. The body has not yet been recovered. Wellington, February 1. A serious accident occurred to-day on the s.s. Pateena, which was at that time just away from the wharf for Pictou and Nelson. On the arrival of a latecomer, gOapt. Stewart gave orders to keep the stern line (which was of wire) taut in order that the vessel should he drawn towards the end, of the wharf, and the late comer taken on board. This induced a tremendous strain on the hawser as it was the only one that was holding the vessel. An able seaman named John Macey, was just stooping down to attend to the wire when it suddenly snapped and a parted end struck him on the side of his head, and felled him to the deck. It was found that he was suffering from concussion of the brain, a severe scalp wound and bruised shoulders. Macey, who was removed to the hospital, is about 30 years of age, and has been employed on the Pateena for the last three months. Christchurch, February 2. At the inquest ou the body of Mrs Laura Christie, evidence showed that she was an inmate of an unlicensed private nursing home. A nurse left her for two or three minutes and when she returned Mrs Christie was missing, and she was subsequently found in a creek face downwards. She was alive, but expired soon afterwards. The Coroner, in returning a verdict that deceased, had drowned herself a state of unsound mind, stated that he would make a strong recommenda fcion to the Government to enforce a strict supervision of unlicensed nursing homes.
