OHAKUNE TOWN BOARD.

From Our Own Correspondent,

The weekly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday evening. Present: Commissioners S. Athy (chairman), Quinn, Loane, Butler, Or. Wilkie being absent at Wanganui on Board business. Correspondence inward was read and dealt with as follows : From Clerk Aotea Land Board, stating that owing to previous correspondence and interviews it was hardly necessary to send delegate to meeting, and if Board required land, it must take it under the Public Works Act, 1908. From Sir J. G. Ward, re opening up Miro and other streets and stating that be will look into the matter.— Received.

From Mr D. McFarlane, re purchasing safe and letter press.—Clerk to write and state Board had ordered the items. From Hon. Minister of Internal Affairs statinng that he had received a copy of by-laws, hut the by-laws did not require approval of Governor or Minister of Internal Affairs. From Mr Ohinuery Suggate, the Board’s Engineer, Auckland, stating he would arrive on Friday.—Received.

From Secrteary to Treasury stating that Right Hon Minister of Finance has provisionally approved of the £SOO loan for constructing and kerbing footpaths, so that necessary steps may be taken to comply with the law, but as the amount already approved faasjreaohed limit allowed by Act, the money will not be available until after the 31st March, 1909.

Proposed by Cr. Butler, seconded by Or. Quinn, that an account be opened in Bank of New Zealand here. —Carried.

Proposed by Or. Butler, seconded by Or. Quinn, that Board apply to Bank for £IOO overdraft.—Carried. Cr. Butler brought up mutter of decayed log in the Mangawhero river that held up the ford near Mr Welch’s estate, that new one was required, aud that Mr Marshall, the owner of the section next the ford, was present to put before the Board the damage done'to his property by the river scouring his section owing to the decayed log. and that he was willing to pay £3 towards cost of new one.

Proposed by Or. Butler, seconded by Chairman, that Ors. Quinn and Loane be empowered to have the work done at once.

Proposed by Or. Loane, seconded by Or 'Quinn that Clerk instruct police re furious driving round Marsh’s corner, and ask him to take action.—Carried.

Proposed by Or. Loane, seconded by Or. Butler, that the dog tax be fixed at 5s each dog.—Carried. £ Proposed by Cr, Loane, seconded bv Or, Butler, that Mr A. Nicol be appointed dog tax collector.—Carried. , , Proposed by Or. Butler, seconded by Or. Loane, that tendeis be called for a supply of collars, —Carried. Proposed by Chairman, seconded by Or. Butler, that Clerk demand from boardinghouse keepers £1 license fee, payable within 14 days. —Carried. Proposed by Cr. Loane, seconded by Or. Quinn, that Mr A. Nicol be appointed Inspector of Nuisances. — Carried. It was decided to leave matter of raising loans for different works proposed to be contracted until the Board’s engineer arrives. The meeting then adjourned until Friday evening, when the Board could meet the engineer.

That Ohakune is still going ahead is further evidenced by the fact that the postal authorities have decided to open the post office every evening from 7 to 8 o’clock for telegraph business, also that Mr Stevens, Inspector for Wanganui Postal District, has decided to open a receiving box at once at the railwayrstation, pending arrangements for establishing an office there. It is pleasing to note that the postal authorities are awakening to the fact that the place needs better postal facilities. Mr Sykes is erecting in the Main street a wheelwright and coach building shop, which he intends carrying on himself.
