WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.

The Wanganui Education Board held their monthly meeting yesterday. Present—Mr F. Pirani (chairman), Messrs Fraser, Bennett, Guthrie, Cargill, Aldridge, Parnell, Dixon, and Spurdle. A deputation consisting of Messrs Bruce, Field and Armstrong waited on the Board on behalf of the School Uommittees |Assocation to ascertain the methods that would be adopted underJtho new Act for,, the appointmen of teachers.—The chairman replied that the Board would have to follow the instructions laid down in the Act, and after re-stating 1 those the deputation that at all times the Board would entertain suggestions from the School Committees, and that the Committees would be furnished with the necessary details before the appointment of any teacher. After several questions relating to the subject discussed had been answered, the deputation thanked the Board for the information supplied and withdrew. U Correspondence was received from the Education Department, notifying the Board that an additional grant had been made of £ISOO for re-' Instating the Wanganui, District High School. The grant was made in order to enable Jthe Board to erect a school suitable for accommodating 400 primary and 70 secondary scholars.

From same, informing the Board that they should establish a miniature rifle range at an opportune time.

Education Boards ,of Auckland, Marlborough, Southland, and Taranaki re compulsory attendance at Technical Schools.

Orangipongo Committee, informing the Board that owing to the closing of the sawmills the school will not re-open after the holidays.— Received.

Messrs Gifford, Moore, and Beale re Rees Bequest, stating that other property had been discovered at Home which would benefit the Bequest if the Board were willing to proceed with the litigation.—Resolved that the solicitors be informed that the Board have no funds to proceed with the litigation. The Oommisssioner Raurimu re water supply.—Resolved that the matter be referred to Mr Aldridge. “

Mr A. Lowe re establishment of school at Ohakone Station.—Resolved that the idea be not entertained. Pohangina Committee Jre erection of technical building.—Received. OTHER BUSINESS. The matter of providing the schools with “Readers” was discussed by the Board. —It was decided to purchase the Readers now in the hands of stationers at the puhished price, to obtain specimen Readers from publishers, and then to call tenders for supply. / It was resolved to make arrangewhereby the travelling expenses fare not included with the salaries of the Inspectors. The matter of eroetiug a chimney at Ohakune was held over. Resovled' that Auroa Committee be informed that the Board will paint the ' shelter sfied when the school is painted. Resolved that the lessee of the Hantapn School Reserve be written to informing him that his tenure of the house terminates on March 31st, 1909.

The chairman moved, and Mr Dixon seconded,'“That/in future the minimum qualification for the bead mastership of a District High School shall be a B I certicfiate, and that headmasters at present in o .barge of such schools be informed that they are expected to give jsome proof that within the next twelve months they are taking steps to conform to this standard, or to give sufficient reasons for not doing so. Resolved that Kimbolton and Makowai and Rongoiti be established as main sohojols.
