THE SAWMILLING INDUSTRY.
A PESSIMISTIC VIEW. Per Press Association. Wellington, January 18 “The sawmillera in New Zealand are, generally speaking, in a very serious position, ” said Mr Mander, M. P., to a Post reporter. Besides the fact that little building is going on and the consequent small demand. American timber enters into successful competition with the New Zealand article. The only remedy is a stiff duty, otherwise sawmillers will have to go into liquidation, and thousands of men will be thrown idle and millions of the best of the valuable timber will go up in smoke because the land must be cleared for settlement, and if mills are not there to out it out it must be burned down.
BREAK-UP OP ASSOCIATION.
