SECRET SERVICE EXPENSES

The United States Congress in 1908 appropriated nearly £1,500,000 for secret service work. The total appropriation for the purpose of prosecuting and preventing frauds on various branches ofjthe public service exceeded £4,700,000. THE IRREPRESSIBLE ROOSEVELT. RIDES 98 MILES [IN I 17 HOURS. In order to demonstrate the reasonableness of his recent order that military and naval officers should periodically ride 90 miles in 3 days, President Roosevelt yesterday, in 17 hours through fsnow and slush, rode 98 miles without fatigue.
