MATRON’S REPORT,

The matron reported as follows; — Number of patients in hospital on December Ist 85, admitted 42, discharged 40, in on January Ist 87. Adopted. INSPECTOR OP WORKS’ REPORT.

Mr Alfrey, the inspector of works, reported as follows ; Operating Theatre.—Very good progress has been made with the contract. The whole of the brickwork is complete, and the building covered in. The plasterers have the whole of the inside walla and most of the ceilings ready for the final coat of Keen’s cement; in fact, the anaesthetic room has received the finishing coat. The outside plaster work is also well under way. All other work is being kept well ahead. Consumptive Annexe. —This contract has been almost at a standstill. The carpenters have practically finished. The drain has been laid from the boundary to the man hole. The painters have most of the outside work completed, but they are unable to {proceed with the inside work, as the plaster work is unsatisfactory. The contractors have been notified to that effect, but so far no action has beeu taken. FIRE APPLIANCES.

Mr O. O. Warner, superintendent o£ the Fire Brigade, wrote stating that he had paid an official visit to the hospital on the Bth inst. He reported as follows: —The 2-inch Water mains at present laid down are not large enongh to cops with a fire of any magnitude. The fire appliances in and round the main -building appear to be well looked after, and are sufficient in number, but I would recommend the advisability of keeping two additional 100 feet lengths of 2-inch hose as reserves in cases where a fire may spread and practically get beyond reach of the lengths now in use. No provision has been made for fire prevention in the infectious ward. I would strongly recommend the Board to have the present 4-inch main extended from Tram street to that ward, ana to have two fire pings at reasonable distances apart, with stand pipes, hose and branches complete, such appliances to work in conjunction with the Fire Brigade’s plant. The water pressure gauge at 11 a.m. on the above date only showed 871 b, and with bouses in the vicinity continually drawing oft' from the supply it is absolutely necessary that something should be done to conserve the pressure in case of a serious outbreak.
