ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association. Dunedin, January 8. William Jenkins, 19 years old, was the victim of a serious accident at Crown Terrace, near Arrow town, this morning While ha was oiling a chaff-cutter his sleeve caught in the cogs, and the arm from abovo the elbow to the shoulder was stripped of the flesh. The arm will probably have to bo amputated at the; shoulder, Wellington, January 9. When off Cape Palliser yesterday Wiberg, a seaman of the barquentine Pelotas from Gisborne to Wellington, jumped overboard. When he found himself in the water he. caught £hold of the log line dragging astern and was hauled on board again. Wiberg was suffering from delirium tremens, and was handed over to the police this morning.

Wililam F. Phillips, aged 33, formerly traveller for Storer, Meek & Co., committed suicide by hanging hmself from a rafter in an outhouse in the garden of a house in Brook street, where his mother was staying. Phillips had been ten months in Wellington asylum previous to the 14th December, and was advised by the doctor to come here for a change. He stayed with relatives in Nile street, and this morning went to see his mother. He left her to go into the garden and was subsequently missed and found as stated. He left an incoherent letter stating the causes of his suicide, but it will not be made.publio till the inquest.
