MANGAWEKA.
From Our Own Correspondent. January 8,
Shearing operations, grass-seeding and haymaking have been at a complete standstill during the past fortnight. The weather conditions have been very unseasonable and there is nothing to show any improvement for a day or two. The eleventh annnal meeting of the Maugaweka Athletic be held on Friday, January 22nd, promises to eclipse all former efforts to cater for the enjoyment and interest of the pnblio, who happen to journey to the picturesque grounds on the banks of the Rangitikei river. The well equipped Recreation Ground surrounded with lovely native bush on one side and high"towering cliffs on the other, attracts the tourist, who often wonders how nature has carved out such an ideal spot. Such is the place where Mangaweka and district will have their day out. The closing of nominations has been extended to the 11th inst., but already the magnificent trophies and big ‘cash prizes have tempted runners from far distant to compete and everything points-to the 1909 gathering beidg a record one. Mr F. Bonner’s trophy, valued at 10 guineas, together with other prizes, are on view at Mr F; Stewart’s Book Arcade.
Mr W. Monkley.'cf the local railway staff, has been transferred to Waitara and left for his new home last week.
