LIONEL TERRY.

Press Association. Christchurch, January 5. With his jelling ‘and screaming, Lionel Terry has for some time past been making almost every n'iht hideous, not only, for tl.e warders and prisoners in the gaoi, but lor , the people living within a fairly wide radius from the gaol. Lyttelton, however, is about to be relieved from the burden of Terry’s ‘ protests” —for snob he considers his nightly bowlings. The special cell for his accommodation and sate custody in the grounds of Sunny side Mental Hospital is now completed

and ready for his reception. Mr M. Oleary, Governor of Lyttelton Gaol, informed a Press reporter last night that Terry would he removed (from Lyttelton Gaol either this afternoon or to-morrow afternoon, and in future warders, prisoners, and the public living in the neighbourhood of the gaol will be able to enjoy their sleep without being awakened at all hoHyrs of the night by loud screams and yells. To guard against any.possible attempt on Terry’s part to make a dash for liberty, or to make any kind of pnhlc “protest,” Mr Oleary has told off three warders specially selected !|£or their strength, agility, and running powers, to conduct him fnm the goal to Sunnyside, and Mr Cleary will also accompany the party to hand over Terry to the charge of the Mental Hospital authorities. Mr Oleary said he anticipated that Terry would he almost certain to give as much trouble as possible on the journey, as be had done for many months at the gaol, hut Mr Oleary stated that there was no danger of away from custody.; „ ~ 1 The process of , “tube-xeedmg Terry, which has had to he carried out daily for the past ten weeks or more, is still being gone on with. Terry, howsver, is said to havo altered very considerably in his appearance, and seems to have lost something of his great strength. Four warders have every day to hold him down while the doctor from Snnnyside feeds him. He spends the gieater part of the day in sleeping, and is then wide awake all night to enable him to carry out his hideous programme of screaming and yelling. His general conduct is said to be extremely bad, and he seems to take delight in giving as much trouble .as possible to those in authority over him. Mr Oleary stated that ns persists in misbehaving himself, and exhibits the greatest ingenuity in making trouble. Terry claims to be a gentleman, and demands of the warders that they should address him as “Mr Terry,” and yet persists in addressing them in the most grossly insulting and disgusting terms.
