A SHOOTING CASE.
. Press Association. Auckland, January 5. The hearing of evidence in ‘.the Takapuna shooting case, which occurred on Christmas Eve, occupied a great portion of to-day in the Police Court. 'lt will be remembered that a farmer, Nicholas Casey, on the night in question, went to the house of W. E. Speck, a neighbour, and called him out. There followed the firing of a gun and the voluntary surrender of Casey, who was charged with attempted murder. The evidence showed that Casey had for some time been annoyd hy the visits of Speck to his house, rightly or wrongly, forming the oipnlon that as Speck Jwas a married man, his attentions i to accused’s 16-year-old . daughter ,werd undesirable Casey and Speck not to come to acoused/'s place, and no notice was/taben of these warnings. Speok deeded that such warnings had been given, but Mr O. O. Kettle, S.M.,, 'clearly intimated that he disbelieved him. Casey’s defence was that he,ihad merely fired the gun to frighten Speck. In the end the charge was by consent of the magistrate reduced to one of common assault, to which Casey pleaded guilty. He was convicted of the lesser offence and discharged.
