Thejmutton market is very dull, and there is scarcely any demand. Prices were maintained solely because the stocks of mutton on hand were light and firmly held .in few hands. Unrrent quotations :• Canterbury mutton 5%d, North Island 3Js|jd, Australian 3u, River Plate 3j^d. There is scarcely any demand ror lamb, uan ter bury brands are quoted at 5%d, other than Canterbury 4%d. Australian stock is accumulating and is quoted at 4^d. The beef market is quiet. Hindquarters are quoted at 3}6d, forequarters 3d.
The butter market is firmer. There is more demand. The market has been favourably affected owing to the severity of the weather, especially for New Zealand brands, on account of the fire on the Paparoa. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 112 s per cwt nominal, and the stock is almost exhausted. Othe r quotations are :—Austrian 114 a, Siberian 102 s, Australian 108 s, Argentine 106 s per cwt. The cheese market is firm. ' There is a better demand. White makes are quoted at 58s, coloured 59s per cwt.
The hemp market is weak and inactive, ami prices are nominally as follows Good fair grade ; on; spot £24 13s, fair grade on spot £22 15s, fair current Manila on spot £24 15s, January to March shipments goods fair grade £24 10s, fair grade £22 10s. Last weex’s outpout from Manila amounted to 25,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is quiet, buyers not being keen to do business. Bright clean 171 b seed is quoted at 78s per owe. nominal.
The hop market is steady. Prices are well maintained. The wool market shows signs of strength. Bradford tops are quoted as follows :—36’s low crossbreds 11:1, 40’s low crossbreds lid, 44’s medium crossbreds la o%d, 50’s halfbreos !■• 4^2 d, oil's quarterbreds Is CD's merinos Is lid.
The following shipments arrived from the River Plate during the month of December: Mutton and lamb respectively—London 139,279 and 18,633; Liverpool 16,320; Newcastle, 12,729 and 1981; Southampton, 4991 and 3006; Cardiff, 167,170 and 2000; Plymouth, 952 and 149; Glas l gow, 2500 and 1700; Ireland, 3577 and 169; Bristol, 3000 and 300 Butter : London and Southampton, 11,865 cwts.
