The heat wave has broken and a cool change set in last night accompanied by light rain in the southeastern districts. LOSS FROM THE FIRES. Received January 6, 10 a.m. Sydney, January 6. Reports from the fire swept district disclose widespread devastation. Settlers along the Hawke sbury Valley, the South Coast and Hunter River districts, were severe sufferers. Many lost their entire crops and some homesteads were burnt. There are thrilling stories of narrow escapes and heroic rescue work. In the pastoral districts, besides many thousands of acres of grass and crops destroyed, numbers of cattle and sheep perished. The great heat wrought havoo among poultry.
